How we approach our work

It feels like technology companies stopped caring about customers a long time ago. We want to be part of the solution instead of the problem, and that informs everything we do at WorkingBits. Technology companies, especially the big ones, push hard to get everybody on subscription-based software. They make it difficult to get your data back out of their platforms once you've got it in, to create lock-in. We want to fight those trends, and we base our principles around that.

Core Principles

1. You own your stuff

The things we build for you are yours. We will always build a solution so that you can pick it up and take it to whatever service provider you want. Even if you sign up for a maintenance plan with us, we won't lock anything of yours down so that it's useless if you take it elsewhere. If you need a specific platform or service for your site, we will work to make the content as easy to decouple as is possible.

2. We work for you

The things we build are for your needs, your budget, and your goals. If we can't do something at the budget you have, we'll offer alternatives. We'll respect platform choices you already have made (for example, we won't rush to get you off Wordpress unless you ask us to). We don't take incentives from providers or services to nudge people towards them.

3. A good user experience benefits everybody

User Experience is much more than how something looks. It's how it performs. How it responds. Nothing drives a potential customer, client, or audience away as easily as a slow site that is bogged down with a ton of add-ons and information-harvesting trackers, or a site that has no clear organizational standards and buries important information below long scrolling pages that only exist so that pictures can "slide in" as you scroll. Good user experience is one of the most powerful tools for attracting and retaining visitors, and that benefits both you and your audience.

4. No generative AI

We think Generative AI doesn't solve the problems that we care to solve. It is certainly capable of generating large volumes of code quickly, and sometimes that code seems superficially correct, but it can also output absolute garbage and usually the only way to know which is which is to have it reviewed carefully and vigilantly by an expert... At which point, you might as well have had said expert build it in the first place. Generative AI does not think. It cannot know things, and it certainly can't understand your website needs and creatively find the best solution.

Pricing philosophy

One of the first things we're going to do as part of any project we're working on is understand the budget (both time and money), and to talk through options where there are gaps. Pricing is extremely dependent on the details of a project and can vary widely for seemingly similar projects, but our goal will always be to find a solution that meets your needs in your budget, and our process is designed so that we can get to a firm quote before starting work. We're willing to look at creative solutions here. For example, while a single artist just starting out might not be able to afford a full-service gallery and commissions site, a group of artist sharing costs might, and could see network benefits from working together. So talk to us, let's see what we come up with together!

Timelines and Process

While each project will have it's own nuances, we have a process that is designed to maximize the chances of success and ensures that everybody's time is respected.
Step 1. Initial Consultation

We start with a free 30 minute consultation. The goal is to get a rough sense of what you want and need and to figure out what is needed before we can produce a Project Plan. This might involve additional free follow-up discussions. At the end of the initial consultation, we will provide you with the specific next steps and a timeline for those.

Step 2. Project Plan

Once we have enough information for a project plan, we can build that. If you wish to proceed, we will build out the project plan and you will recieve a document indicating what will be built, on what timeline, how status will be shared, a firm price quote, and how it specifically will meet your needs. The project plan costs $200, and if you elect to proceed to construction, this fee will be applied towards the total project cost.

Step 3. Construction

Construction will follow the Project Plan. Any unexpected disruptions that require adjustments to the plan will be communicated promptly. A deposit of half the total project cost (minus the project plan fee) is needed to begin construction.

Step 4. Delivery

Once everything is built, we will collect the remaining fee and hand the project off to you! What that handoff looks like will be included in the Project Plan and will depend on what is right for you. For some customers, this might involve handing off HTML, CSS, and Javascript files. For others it might mean ensuring the site is live, reachable, and with all the administrative details like web host and domain name handled. If you elect for a maintenance plan, it begins at handoff.
